ALBUM NOTES |
This CD offers us the full range of the Clarinet family in the form of a choir. Director Mitch Estrin entertained the world with the first two releases, "Wind in the Reeds" and "Clarinet Thunder." With this release, he hits the trifecta and offers us brilliant and well written works for the Clarinet family.
Recorded in high resolution and using Buffet Crampon instruments with Vandoren reeds and mouth pieces, the uniformity of sound and balance is impeccable.
Reviewer Ira Novoselsky of Bandworld writes:
“This is the third recording by the widely acclaimed University of Florida Clarinet Ensemble and it is an absolute treat. Among the treasures on this recording is "The Young Person's Guide to the Clarinet Choir" (Harvey & Estrin). In a similar style of "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" (Benjamin Britten) this piece introduces each member of the clarinet choir to the listener (including the A-flat clarinet and the basset horn). The famous composer/arranger Lucien Cailliet made several significant contributions to the repertoire of the clarinet choir; the choice of Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" is one of his best. Matt Johnston has made splendid transcriptions of the Gustav Holst Military Band Suites for clarinet choir, the "English Folk Suite" of Ralph Vaughan Williams is a most worthy complement to those works. Transcriptions of Mendelssohn, Weber, Rimsky-Korsakov, Gershwin and Freddie Mercury are also featured along with an original clarinet octet Capriccio by the eminent Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa. Enjoy!!â€
AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE declares:
“A word about the tonal spectrum created by this ensemble is necessary... This ensemble has wonderful blend and plays very well as one voice---in magnificent tonal moments they have the majesty and breadth of a pipe organ.â€

“...It [the CD] superbly demonstrates the clarinet as it was meant to be played, as well as giving exposure to often overlooked members of the clarinet family. I recommend it heartily to any fan of the clarinet.†|
