PROJECT OVERVIEW
While the nickname "Nutmeggers" may have an uncertain origin-possibly linked to early Connecticut traders and their infamous wooden nutmegs-this recording
embraces the name with pride, celebrating the outstanding creativity of Connecticut's composers.
As the Plainville Wind Ensemble has continued to grow artistically, we've had the privilege of collaborating with renowned composers and conductors including Robert W.
Smith, Johan de Meij, and Randall Standridge. With this project, however, we turn our focus inward-to spotlight the vibrant and diverse musical voices emerging right
here in our home state.
This recording brings together a dynamic mix of works from Connecticut-based composers, highlighting a range of styles, themes, and personal stories. We are honored to
include I Sit Alone in Martin's Church, conducted by its composer Dr. Thomas Duffy-an influential figure in wind band literature and longtime Director of Bands at Yale
University. The piece evokes a profound reflection on spiritual heritage through a fusion of Protestant chorales and African American musical traditions.
We also proudly present the full premiere of Brett Berardi's Primals, a bold and deeply personal three-movement symphony inspired by the elemental forces of Fire, Water,
and Earth. With musical tributes to Berardi's most formative compositional influences, Primals reflects a unique contemporary voice emerging from Connecticut's new
generation of composers.
Additional works featured on this recording include A Hymn to the Beauty That Was by Jane Russell Bate, an elegiac tribute honoring the lives lost in the 2007 Cheshire
tragedy; First Responders by Anthony Susi, a powerful march honoring those who selflessly serve in times of crisis; Madlyn's March by Ken Bagley, a heartfelt family tribute
rooted in traditional form; and Discover the Wild by Grammy-nominated composer Kenneth Fuchs, a captivating overture of sweeping textures and lyrical strength.
We close with Eric Osterling's spirited march The Nutmeggers, bringing full circle our tribute to Connecticut's nickname and musical identity.
This recording is a celebration of the people, places, and stories that shape the sound of Connecticut today. It is our hope that The Nutmeggers inspires a greater appreciation
for the artistry thriving in our own communities.
