Project:
Born and raised in a small town in West Texas, Raquel Samayoa grew up surrounded by the
vibrant sounds of Tejano and Mariachi music. As her passion for classical music deepened, she was drawn to repertoire infused with Spanish and Latin American character. Her
discovery of Rafael Mendez's music, particularly his celebrated performance of La Virgen
de la Macarena, proved especially influential and inspiring.
This recording pays tribute to Samayoa's early musical influences and the cultural heritage
that shaped her artistic voice. The selections highlight works by Hispanic and Brazilian
composers, as well as pieces distinguished by a strong Spanish flavor. Hora Staccato and
Czardas, while not of Spanish origin, are included in recognition of their prominence in
Mendez's signature repertoire.
This recording is dedicated to the memory of her mother, Tomasa Heredia, and
her grandfather, Jesus "Chuy" Heredia, whose enduring influence shaped her
musical journey.
